American Gangster

Caught American Gangster last week, interesting, yet somehow devoid of depth. It is based on "true events" (in the pure Hollywood sense) so it washes over you, leaves you enlightened and entertained but wanting to know the real story. In that sense it does the job. Starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe - both do wonderful jobs with rather two-dimensional characters. It is a shame that there wasn't more character development, the script sets up the past signposts in terms of 'need to know' for future events.
Russell Crowe does a wonderful job but can forget Hollywood nods and awards (they just don't like our Russ!) Denzel Washington is very effective and has been nominated for an Academy award. While wonderful news for him, I would argue that he has the more meatier role and the nasty characters chew scenery and always get the attention.
